Ka’Sandra Wade, mother of a 10-year-old son, started working at Action United about nine months ago as an intern.
Ka’Sandra was hired part-time as an administrative assistant and was offered full-time status in the same position. She was set to start Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
Instead, on Jan.1, Ka’Sandra Wade became the first murder of 2013 in the City of Pittsburgh. She was 33.

Ka’Sandra Wade was shot to death by her estranged boyfriend at her apartment — an apartment that her co-workers helped her move to after Anthony Brown threatened to kill her with a gun and machete.
Hours later, at his apartment, Brown died of a self-inflicted gunshot.

Kassandra Michelle Perkins was 22 and the mother of a 3 months old baby girl. Kassandra was murdered by her boyfriend, Jovan Belcher. Belcher shot Kassandra Michelle Perkins multiple times before he killed himself.

In the aftermath of Kassandra’s murder, the media focused much of its attention on Jovan Belcher. Belcher was an NFL player with the Kansas City Chiefs. Kassandra became an afterthought in stories that should have held her in the spotlight.

Though the national headlines on the story of Kassandra Michelle Perkins (somewhat) brought attention to Domestic Abuse/Intimate Partner Abuse there a countless of others whose stories are never heard by many. The Pittsburgh Women’s Blogging Society did not want that to happen to Ka’Sandra Wade. Today, bloggers (both male and female) in the city of Pittsburgh (and beyond) are holding a Cyber vigil for Ka’Sandra Wade.

• Every day in the US, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends.
• Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten.
• Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women—more than car accidents, muggings, and rapes combined.
• Close to 70% of women killed by a gun were murdered by the hand of an intimate partner.
• 89% of victims who had been physically abused had also been stalked in the 12 months before the murder.

I wanted to share my thoughts on Ka’Sandra’s story and Kassandra Michelle Perkins’ story however, I think for now it is more important to remember. To reflect on the lives lost because regardless, of age, race, celebrity status or income; these women are my sisters.

Sharon, it breaks my heart when I hear of these stories. There are so many sisters dying at the hands of violent men. And oftentimes, we DON’T REMEMBER THEIR NAMES…we remember the murderer’s names. Thank you for sharing this with the world! You are such a beautiful sister.

Thanks for helping us remember. Often times these stories are brushed under the rug and forgotten. This is my first time hearing about Ms. Wade’s tragic story. This breaks my heart that men travel this path. Senseless!
