Tell us a little about you (the person behind the blog).
I’m a Chicago wife, mother, blogger and recycled clothing seller. I’m also the creator of Thriftanista Social Club, an online and in person meeting place for fashionable thrift shoppers. When I’m not seeking out good deals, I’m the personal assistant to Violet, my 2 year old baby girl. My favorite things: giveaways, parties, Sesame Street, treasure hunting and wine.
Tell us about your blog.
Founded in 2010, Thriftanista in the City is a thrift and budget-friendly style blog. It is a place to learn about thrift shopping, showcase recycled fashion finds, and experiment with fashion trends. Beauty / makeup, diy, local events, and kid fashion post are included as well.
What inspired you to first start writing your blog?
I started out as a mommy blogger and I was trying to connect with other moms. I was new to motherhood and felt really alone and unsure so I turned to social media for support and guidance. I learned a lot from other mothers and how to follow my own gut about what was best for me and Violet. Once I became somewhat comfortable with my new “role” I transitioned my blog into a fashion / style blog and a place to show off my thrift finds.
How has blogging affected your life?
I’m more social than I’ve ever been. Not just online but in person too. I started a group for thrifters and organized a few meetups, I attend more networking events. I vlog. These are things that I never thought I would be doing as I self identify as being shy and introverted. I’ve found more confidence in myself!
What has been the biggest challenge you have faced with your blog?
The challenge for me is working with my technical and photography skills level. I want a pretty cohesive blog space and crisp clearer pictures. I don’t have that expertise and the frugal me will not pay for training so I scour the ‘nets for info. I’ve learned a few new things but still not at the advanced level I would like to be.
What advice would you give to new bloggers?
Blog about what you like and keep a pace that works for you. Keep the love of blogging as your focus and you will be successful at it.
