When one thinks about cosmetic surgery, most likely the thoughts that come to mind, are centered around face lifts and tummy tucks however, vanity has taken a new level, cosmetic foot surgery. Previously, foot surgery took place on the account of excruciating pain or distorted feet, now the trend is more about looks than comfort. Today, instead of purchasing shoes that fit the foot; many women are opting to make the foot fit the shoe.
One common procedure for cosmetic foot surgery is toe shortening, in which, bones are removed from the second and third joint. There is also the procedure of having the foot narrowed by surgically shaving down both sides of the foot. Another, common cosmetic procedure, is to inject fillers into the fat pad of the foot. Injecting fillers is done because over time feet lose their natural cushioning and walking can become painful, especially in high heels (Injecting fillers temporarily replaces the cushion). There is even a procedure for reducing fat toes.
Altering the foot size is often risky. Feet bear a person’s full body weight throughout the day and any alterations can lead to complications. Foot surgery can lead to infection, nerve damage, prolonged swelling of the toe, and chronic pain walking. Bones of the feet can become weak, may not heal properly, become floppy, or misaligned. Foot surgery that is done incorrectly can also lead to problems with the hips or knees. The worse result, not only is one unable to wear the shoes one originally had the surgery for, but not being able to wear any shoes at all.
There are other alternatives to foot surgery. Consider the numerous foot products sold in pharmacies and online to provide comfort when wearing certain style shoes. Such as, gel cushions, for the ball of the foot or the heel, that are inserted in the shoe to provide comfort. These alternatives are cheaper and much safer.
Many of the prevalent forefront deformities including; bunions, hammer toes, claw toes, and corns, are associated with repetitively wearing of ill-fitting shoes. The continuation of wearing ill-fitted shoes, even after surgery, will lead to a reoccurrence of foot deformities, pain, or new problems.
The best thing, a woman, can do for her foot is wear better fitting shoes. Shoes that are her true size and not a size smaller.
If you still wish to have cosmetic foot surgery, your best protection is you. Research the procedure you wish to have done, ask questions, and use a qualified doctor by inquiring of his educational background, certifications, and work experience.
