Britt of In Pursuit of Happiness

Tell us a little about you (the person behind the blog).

I’m a freelance writer who grew up in Iowa, lived in Florida, traveled the country in an RV for a year with two kids, and now lives in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill. I have two kids and one husband I almost divorced (but didn’t, thanks to a crap ton of marriage counseling.) I’m obsessed with travel and happiness.

Tell us about your blog.

My blog, In Pursuit of Happiness, is about learning to take responsibility for our own happiness in our daily lives. I talk about travel, relationships, personal growth, and the day-to-day decisions I make to try and be happier. It’s more “how come?” and “why not?” than “how to.”

What inspired you to first start writing your blog?

I actually started blogging for the first time in 2005 on a site called Miss Britt (hence the name Miss Britt used everywhere.) My life changed pretty dramatically a few years ago, however, and I became less interested in entertaining the Internet and more in leaving a positive mark on the world. I decided to focus my personal website on the pursuit of happiness.

How has blogging affected your life?

I never considered myself a writer before blogging. Now that’s how I earn my living and support my family. It’s also because of blogging that I left that small town in Iowa 5 years ago and moved to Florida to work for someone I actually met through my blog. Blogging has helped me figure out who I am and meet most of my closest friends.

What has been the biggest challenge you have faced with your blog?

Well, I used to use blogging as an alternative to therapy. Turns out, you get what you pay for.

What advice would you give to new bloggers?

Don’t forget to live a life worth blogging about. And remember that being Internet famous is like being homecoming queen in Parkersburg, Iowa; it’s irrelevant in the grand scheme of things and a goal that is probably beneath you. :-)

Which three posts (links) on your blog you like to share?

I Quit Blogging Yesterday – this is probably a pretty good look at who I am today as a blogger :-)

  3. I like the idea of making a conscious choice to leave a positive mark. It can be a challenge in this world that’s enamored with controversy and conflict. It is an honor and a pleasure to add your website to my blog roll. Sharon thanks you so much for sharing Britt’s positive and inspiring story.
