I went to the mall in search of the perfect shoes to wear with a dress that I have hanging in my closet. After hours of store hopping, browsing display after display and trying on shoes just because I had to (there’s my obsession with seeing how lovely fifty pairs of high heels look on my feet), I came home empty-handed and extremely disappointed.
Over and over in my head I kept repeating the words “just like life … just like life.”
I am sure many of you have seen the movie Forrest Gump. In the movie, Forrest says that famous line, “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get.”

Well, I have a different take on what life is like. In particular, I am writing on what a woman’s life is like. It is a proven scientific fact that a woman’s life is best represented by our pursuit of a pair of high heels. Okay, okay … it’s not a proven fact; it is more like my theory. However, I would argue that it is a very good one.
The first reason why a woman’s life is like the pursuit of a pair of high heels: Everything is not as simple as we would like it to be. There I was, a little disappointed in my failed attempt to purchase the pair of perfect killer heels in my price range. I am positive that if I had had a larger budget, I would have achieved my goal. I am, unfortunately, not a wealthy woman and must live within my means. That does not mean that I do not want quality and style; it means I am seeking quality and style at a low cost.
At that time, I was limited in the funds I could spend. That day, in my price range, I found heels close to what I wanted, but not exactly what I wanted. I found styles close to what I wanted, but not exactly what I wanted. I even found shoes exactly the style I wanted, but the color was wrong. Which brings me to another reason life is like high heels: We cannot always have what we want when we want it.
That immediately brings me to another similarity: We never should settle for less than what we want. We must stay focused on our goals and have the patience to wait for that golden opportunity. It doesn’t matter if we are searching for a better job or our soul mate. On that day, my goal was just to find a pair of high heels to match the dress hanging in the closet. That day, although I was disappointed in my failed attempt to purchase the perfect pair of shoes, I was not discouraged. I knew that it was only a minor setback, because good deals come to those who have the patience.

Yes, I have since located a pair of high heels, and at a great price—which means “on sale.” It is so wonderful to walk into a store and find a pair of heels—a pair that you have been eyeing for weeks—on sale. Life is so full of little surprises, even when it seems as if things will never go our way. And despite not being able to wear the dress for the event in which I wanted to wear it, the next time opportunity knocks, I will be ready and wearing the perfect pair of killer high heels.
The similarities do not stop at shopping. High heels are like every part of our lives.
As I said, sometimes it seems as if things will never go our way. It’s like when we scuff a pair of brand-new high heels, or even more devastating, the heel breaks completely off. Life is full of minor disappointments and even a few major ones.
We all know that wearing high heels can cause not only discomfort but also excruciating pain, which leaves one wondering why they keep wearing those damn things. Sometimes, we just want to take those high heels off, call timeout and sit down. Isn’t that just like life? We go through heartbreak and heartache, yet we still continue seeking love. We continue to wake, get out of bed, and go through our day. Life sometimes hurts us to the core; however, we still persevere.
Another lesson that we get from high heels is that while I love high heels and the way they make me look and feel, there are drawbacks to wearing them, because in life, nothing is ever perfect.
What’s the best lesson from high heels? “Life is wonderful and so am I.”
How is your life like a pair of high heels?

Very nice post! Personally, I try to keep an open mind, both in life and shopping!

I love this…. well the one thing that I can say is this. My life is like a pair of heels because while it might look great on the outside to others, only I can know about all of the bumps (& pains ) along the way.
