The holidays (with their joyous festivities) are over. Spring (with its promise of sunshine and warmth) is months away. Many of us are living in the middle of winter’s wrath of snow, ice, and bone chilling blowing winds. The days are short, dreary, and cold.
”The Winter Blues”, are feelings of hopelessness and despair. When those feeling are coupled with being cooped up indoors all day; you have a recipe for depression.
What is a sun-starved shoe-nista to do (even when opening the closet door does not bring a smile to your face)?
The perfect circumstances to spur a condition we term, “The Winter Blues”.
Here are three tips to help combat those “Blues”.
1. Exercise: During the winter months, much of the activities that kept us busy during the summer tend to cease. We find ourselves huddling idle on couches and in beds for longer periods of time and that is most certainly a way to become susceptible to depression (and let me not forget to mention consequences like weight-gain and decreased attention to healthy lifestyle habits)
While going outdoors and taking a long walk my not sound practical (although possible) for many of us, there are other alternatives. One way to get the exercise we need is to join a gym.
Joining a gym will serve a few purposes in combating the blues. It will get you out of the house for a least an hour or so. It will help you get into shape so when swimsuit season rolls around you are in great shape for that itsy bitsy bikini. And don’t forget being in shape will help alleviate some of the discomfort we suffer from when wearing high heels. Lastly, the gym is a great place to meet new people (maybe even a potential date for the single ladies looking for love).
If joining a gym does not fit into your schedule or your budget that does not mean you have no other options to get your body moving. Here’s what you do. Turn the music up. Not the “I’m so lonely” love songs or “No one wants me” mood music (a most definite way to add to your depression), turn on the “get up and shake a tail feather” music. Between the rhyme, the vigorous moving, your blood flowing rapidly through your veins and the good fun you will have; you will find yourself smiling and feeling great.
2. Get Away: That’s right get away. Even if it is only for a weekend. Sometimes just leaving the environment around you for a few days is all one needs to clear the mind and get positive thoughts flowing again. Not in a financial state to take a vacation. Maybe, you can’t get the time off from work to leave town. Well, the next best thing to do is plan your next vacation. Doing so, will not only give you something to look forward to, it will excite your mind. Where to go? What will you need for the trip? A new pair of heels for dinner and dancing out on the town? Maybe, a weekend getaway with the girls for fun, fashion, and shopping? A romantic getaway for two to wine country. Send away for brochures and look up the potential spots on the internet. Even if you know you are not going to the Bahamas it will not hurt to look at the beaches and imagine yourself sunning there.
3. New Venture: It doesn’t matter if you are trying to learn something new for self-improvement, plan for a future business or to climb the career-ladder at work. Whatever it is that you are interested in, NOW is a great time to focus on it, instead of sitting by and waiting for spring to break. If you fill your downtime with learning, reading, and studying you will not have the time to notice the overcast weather conditions. Soon you will find yourself headed toward your new goal and the sun will be shining brightly again.
