Year 2009 in Review/Fashion Night Out

It’s that time of the year when we look back with remembrance over all the exciting events, people, and moments that have shaped our world and lives in 2009. Here at Queen in Heels, we are looking back from two points of view: one being from that of a woman and the other being from a fashion standpoint. By fashion we mean the accessories we have journeyed in during 2009 . . . high heels.

One notable fashion event that we had enjoyed was Fashion’s Night Out.

Fashion’s Night Out was devised and coordinated by the editors and publishers from the international editions of Vogue and spearheaded by Anne Wintour, editor in chief of the U.S. edition of Vogue.

The event was created as a way to get people shopping again and to help stimulate fashion retail.

The first Fashion’s Night Out event took place on Thursday, September 10, 2009. It was held almost simultaneously in numerous cities around the world within countries ranging from America to England, Japan to France and many other locales in between. The participating stores stayed open until 11 P.M. and had festivities, activities, and personal appearances by celebrities, designers, and models.

Besides the merchandise that the stores carried, limited edition items were sold that were especially designed just for that evening. Some items like the Fashion’s Night Out T-shirt, also benefited charity (40 percent of proceeds went to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in Manhattan).

In New York, stores spanning all five boroughs participated in the event. There was free food and glasses of Champagne given to customers and browsers alike. A city wide clothing drive was organized in which people were encouraged to donate new and/or gently used clothing to the NYC AIDS Funds.

Some of the celebrities on hand were the Olsen Twins bartending at Bergdorf Goodman, Rihanna at Giuseppe Zanotti, and Oscar de la Renta singing to delighted onlookers.

In London, at Maison Martin Margiela, customers were first greeted by music being spun by DJs and later feasted on a Brazilian buffet. At Stella McCartney’s store, free manicures were offered. Shoe designer, Rupert Sanderson turned his shop into a painting studio for the evening. Those who entered his store, painted a square tile that he would later assemble in Berkley Square to create the largest high heel ever.

Fashion’s Night Out was considered a huge success and recently the announcement has been made that it will be returning.
