Sonia Rykiel was born May 25, 1930 in Paris, France.
While pregnant, Sonia couldn’t find any soft sweaters to wear. She decided to design her own.
Her first sweater, was sold under the label, Laura. It made the cover of Elle fashion magazine.
In May 1968, Sonia Rykiel found her label and opened her first boutique on Rue de Grenelle in Paris. Around the same time, she was given the title, “Queen of Knitwear” by Women’s Wear Daily.
Sonia is the first designer to put seams on the outside of a garment. She is also one of the first to print words on a sweater.
Sonia Rykiel is also a published author. She has written nine books. The subjects of her book range from fashion to children stories.
She currently runs her fashion empire with her daughter, Nathalie.
